Expeditions

When people write to ask us what makes expedition cruising with Antarctica21 unique, the answer lies in our boutique vessels and the paradoxical nature of Antarctica itself, a destination that is simultaneously vast and intimate. When you choose to travel on one of our custom-built vessels made for upscale adventures, you’ll experience the magnificence of the continent while learning from members our experienced expedition team like Kirsty Dick, Head of Expedition Staff & Delivery for Antarctica21.

With an MA in History and an MSc in Marine Systems and Policy, Kirsty has guided in Antarctica since 2018, spending approximately 120 days south of the 60th parallel each season.

"Expedition cruising enables you to explore this immensity and detail at the same time, out on the water in Zodiacs, walking and exploring on shore, and also observing these superb landscapes from the ship," says Kirsty.

Kirsty believes the advantages of smaller vessels are infinite when exploring Antarctica. With fewer guests per voyage, Antarctica21 ensures maximum opportunities for everyone aboard, allowing quick disembarkation and a more personal journey. "The experience also feels much more exclusive with fewer guests, enabling you to connect with your fellow travelers but also spend time with the expedition team and learn from their expertise of the area," says Kirsty.

Flexibility is essential when traveling in Antarctica, too, making our boutique vessels ideal. They are designed to be nimble in polar regions, allowing our expeditions to adapt quickly to changing conditions while maintaining safety as our top priority. "We build flexibility into every plan we make so that we are ready to adjust to whatever Antarctica might throw at us, finding pockets of calm or taking the opportunity to explore in order to maximize your experience," says Kirsty.

Many guests believe they know what to expect from Antarctica, but the reality often exceeds their imagination. The immersive nature of our voyages captures the essence of this unique corner of our planet.

"What we often hear from guests is that they thought they knew what they were coming to Antarctica to see and experience, but that at the end of their time onboard with us, their trip exceeded every one of those expectations," says Kirsty. “One thing that sets Antarctica21 apart from other expedition cruise companies is our size: always under 100 guests, the experience is personal, exclusive, and intimate. You will be able to experience this great wilderness as it should be: at one with nature.”

Kirsty adds that Antarctica21 is unique because we are still owned by those who founded the company 20 years ago, meaning there remains a strong family ethos. “This percolates through every level from our offices to our crew onboard,” says Kirsty.

So, what makes the ideal mindset for joining an expedition cruise?

"It's important to come onboard with an open mind, ready for every adventure and to understand that plans will change during our journey as we adapt to the ever-changing conditions of this extreme polar environment," says Kirsty.

Whether observing penguins in their rookeries, watching whales breach the surface, or simply standing in awe of towering ice formations, Antarctica captivates in ways that words struggle to convey. When you experience it with Antarctica21, you'll do so with the perfect blend of comfort, expertise, and intimate adventure.
